Why Facebook’s Data Sharing Matters

facebook-datamining-does-matter

Facebook has cut a deal with political website Politico that allows the independent site machine-access to Facebook users’ messages, both public and private, when a Republican Presidential candidate is mentioned by name. The data is being collected and analyzed for sentiment by Facebook’s data team, then delivered to Politico to serve as the basis of data-driven political analysis and journalism.

The move is being widely condemned in the press as a violation of privacy but if Facebook would do this right, it could be a huge win for everyone. Facebook could be the biggest, most dynamic census of human opinion and interaction in history. Unfortunately, failure to talk prominently about privacy protections, failure to make this opt-in (or even opt out!) and the inclusion of private messages are all things that put at risk any remaining shreds of trust in Facebook that could have served as the foundation of a new era of social self-awareness.

The magnetic strips used in ATM cards here utilise a type of technology that is at least 30 years old, said computer security experts.

The best prevention against ATM fraud is to switch to a smart card technology that would entail embedding a computer chip into the card, they added, but practical difficulties mean this solution will not be adopted any time soon.

The issue of ATM card security came into focus last week after fraudsters stole about $500,000 from about 400 customers in two days as part of what was believed to be an ATM-skimming scam.

AAPL’s voice recognition software Siri has prompted owners of the iPhone 4S to use almost twice as much data compared with the handset’s predecessor, placing greater pressure on operators, network firm Arieso said.“Voice is the ultimate human interface,” Arieso Chief Technology Officer Michael Flanagan said in an interview in London. “As you lower the barriers,” consumers will use their smartphones’ functions even more often, he said. Arieso, based in Atlanta, advises clients such as Vodafone Group Plc VOD, Telefonica SA TEF and Nokia Siemens Networks Oy on how to manage wireless networks.Apple brought in Siri, dubbed a virtual personal assistant, in its latest iPhone update in October. With a few spoken words, the artificial-intelligence feature helps iPhone users schedule appointments, write text messages and check the local weather. Arieso said it measured more than 1 million subscribers across a single European network in both urban and rural areas, without identifying the operator. The strain of data-intensive devices may place additional pressure on mobile operators as they build out faster networks. Verizon Wireless, the largest U.S. carrier, said this week the number of iPhones it sold doubled to 4.2 million in the fourth quarter.
